I think we have now a 3 way competition for the best social network, facebook now is not only competing with Google + but twitter got into the race too. You might think they where already, but tweeter was left behind by the power of facebook and the business pages...  well, now twitter announces branded twitter professional pages coming up...  
 

Joomla has won the Packt Publishing award for the top open source CMS.

Now in its sixth year, many consider the Packt Open Source Award as a top honor for an open source project. Joomla won the award based on a combination of public voting and input by a panel of judges consisting of open source luminaries.

Julian Copes of Packt Publishing said:

“Although around since 2005, Joomla really reinvented itself this year with the introduction of Joomla 1.6 and 1.7, the first product releases for the CMS since 2008. Furthermore, Joomla realized dramatic growth this year as evidenced by its number of downloads and documented government sites powered by Joomla. We are proud to honor Joomla with its third Packt Open Source Award since we launched it six years ago.”

Joomla previously won the same award, the Packt Open Source CMS Award, in 2006 and also won the Packt Best PHP Open Source CMS Award 2007. Some of the milestones the open source CMS reached this year that contributed to it winning the Packt award include:

• Joomla surpassed 26 million downloads. Although it launched in 2005, this number is only from 2007 to the present since that is when Joomla began documenting downloads.
• It documented more than 2,900 government sites worldwide powered by Joomla. These include the U.S. Central Command, U.K. Ministry of Defense and many more.
• Info-Tech Research recently confirmed Joomla powers more than 1.5 million websites. These include Citibank, eBay, General Electric and many more.

Ryan Ozimek, president of Open Source Matters, the not-for-profit created to provide organizational, legal and financial support to the Joomla project, said:

“Joomla’s documented growth over the past year is a bi-product of our broad, diverse community spanning hundreds of thousands of people around the world. The people and open source experts have spoken with this award and we are honored that they have acknowledged what all of these people in our community passionately believe — Joomla is the absolutely best platform to power websites, Intranets and blogs.”

Google has finally unveiled brand pages for Google+, allowing businesses and brands to join Google’s social network.

“So far Google+ has focused on connecting people with other people,” Google SVP of Social Vic Gundotra said in a blog post. “But we want to make sure you can build relationships with all the things you care about—from local businesses to global brands—so today we’re rolling out Google+ Pages worldwide.”

The new Google+ brand pages look similar to Google+ Profiles, except for the little square icon that designates that it’s a Page rather than a Profile. Users can add brands such as Fox News, the Dallas Cowboys and Angry Birds to their circles, check out their information and browse their photos. When users add a brand to their circles, it increases that brand’s follower count.

I was cleaning my computer files today and found one of the websites we did in 2004... WOW... it was like TIME TRAVELING :) 
It's amazing how website technology has evolved in the past 7 years.

Then (2004)

This site was consider awesome at that time :) but looking at it today, every picture on the photo gallery was a separated HTML file (A SEPARATED PAGE) instead of being part of an actual PHOTO GALLERY... I also remember having to setup every link for the BEFORE and AFTER arrows in the gallery...  each a separated link done one by one... CRAZY!
Another old technology I remember as part of this site was the use of FRAMES, then a very nice tool to separate different parts of a website and create nice menus with pages inside, NOW a horrible memory from the past that hides EVERYTHING from google :)

Facebook shopping (f-commerce) is beginning to turn the tide of doing business online, and the businesses that are taking advantage of using facebook fan pages for at least one step of their marketing process are reaping the benefits.

The experts are predicting $30 billion in global purchases on facebook by 2015. Currently, we are at $5 billion in transactions occurring on Facebook, so $30 billion seems a long way off, until you look at the trends. The truth is, if Facebook is watching the numbers , we’re most likely going to see more and more features for businesses added to the already growing fan page commerce offering.

If you’re just looking at fan pages along, Facebook’s actions suggest that there’s no limit to where things could go. Facebook is offering businesses the ability to attract thousands of new fans with new features like iframes, questions, at tagging, etc. They’ve given businesses a place to interact with their customers, which is leading to more sales because everything is happening inside a trusted and safe environment.

Facebook has overhauled its Pages Insights analytics tool and added a new metric to gauge the health of a page: “People Talking About.”

That statistic, which users will see on Pages below the total number of “Likes,” will be one of four tracked by Pages Insights. The idea is that users will understand a Page with a high People Talking About rating is one that has compelling content. Likewise, content creators will be motivated to make their Pages more comment-worthy.

People Talking About (that might not be the final name for the metric; at press time, Facebook wasn’t sure) will measure user-initiated activity related to a Page, including posting to a Page’s Wall, “liking,” commenting, sharing a Page post or content on the Page, answering a Question posed to fans, mentioning a Page, “liking” or sharing a deal or checking in at your Place.
